Indonesia is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, and two of its most famous attractions are Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen.
These two volcanoes, located in East Java, are popular destinations for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
If you are planning to visit Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen, one great way to do so is through GWI Tour & Travel (MOBITO). They offer a variety of packages that can help you explore these amazing places.
This Bromo-Ijen itinerary covers a 3-day tour with GWI Tour & Travel (MOBITO) that takes you to Mount Bromo and Mount Ijen. Here is what you can expect from the trip:
Day 1: From Surabaya to Mt. Bromo
The Bromo Ijen tour starts with a pickup from Surabaya, where they will pick you up from your hotel.
In our case, two of us were arriving from Yogyakarta by train, and our guide Rahman and driver Sopi picked us up from the train station before picking up two more friends from the airport.
GWI Tour & Travel (MOBITO) offers transportation in comfortable air-conditioned vehicles, and the journey to Mount Bromo takes approximately 3-4 hours.
During the journey, you can enjoy the scenic countryside of East Java, including rice fields, small villages, and traditional markets.
Upon reaching Mount Bromo, we stayed at the Istana Petani Hotel in Probolinggo, a small village near Mt. Bromo.
Note: There are two types of Bromo Ijen Tour Packages available – the standard tour and the economy tour.
The key difference between the standard tour and economy tour lies in the accommodations provided:
- Standard Private Tour: Accommodations in hotels at Bromo and Ijen
- Economy Private Tour: Accommodation in a homestay. Despite being homestays, the arrangements include private rooms and bathrooms, similar to a hotel.
The choice between the two options depends on your budget and accommodation preferences.
Our hotel was basic, with a simple bathroom but spacious rooms, suitable for short stays.
After checking in, we had free time to explore the area where you can relax and enjoy the awe-inspiring views of the mountains or take a stroll in the nearby friendly local villages.
We concluded the day with a quick dinner at the hotel, retiring early for the next day’s early start, stargazing at the amazing night sky due to minimal light pollution in the region (weather permitting).!
Day 2. Sunrise hike to Mt. Bromo and to Banyuwangi/Bondowoso
The way to the viewpoint
Witnessing a Majestic Sunrise Over Mount Bromo
An early rise is a must for any Bromo adventure! We began our journey at 2:00 AM, eager to embark on the iconic hike to Mount Bromo’s viewpoint.
Our driver transported us efficiently to the Bromo area, where a breathtaking panorama awaited.
Reaching the Viewpoint: Penanjakan and King Kong Hill
After acquiring the entrance fee (currently 220K IDR per person, approximately €13.50), we proceeded to the viewpoint.
Our guide led us towards Mount Penanjakan, a popular spot known for its stunning sunrise views over the Bromo caldera.
Beating the Crowds and Embracing the Chill
While Penanjakan offers a magnificent perspective, we ventured further along a hidden trail to reach King Kong Hill.
This lesser-known location provided a more intimate experience, allowing us to witness the sunrise with fewer fellow travelers.
Although the climb is relatively short, it’s quite steep, so be prepared for a bit of exertion.
Bromo Jeep 4X4 ride and hike to Mt. Bromo crater
Thrilling Bromo Jeep Adventure & Exploring the Active Crater
After witnessing the breathtaking Bromo sunrise, our adventure continued with a thrilling ride through the caldera aboard a rugged 4×4 Jeep.
The volcanic landscape, dusted with ash and dotted with smoking vents, offered an otherworldly experience – like driving through Mars!
While some visitors opt for a horseback ride across the caldera floor, we chose a more sustainable and ethical option.

Reaching the foot of Mount Bromo, we embarked on a relatively easy climb. Although numerous steps line the path, it’s still a worthwhile ascent.
At the crater rim, depending on wind and volcanic activity, you might be able to peer into the depths – a mesmerizing sight of steaming vents and a rumbling symphony emanating from the Earth’s core.
Bromo To Ijen Accommodation: Road to Ijen Banyuwangi
After the hike we went back to our hotel for breakfast and took the car to Banyuwangi, our base for the Mt. Ijen hike.
The drive took around 6 hours, so we had plenty of time to relax and enjoy the scenery along the way (and mostly take a nap!).
Refueling and Relaxing After Mount Bromo
After our exciting adventure at Mount Bromo, we went back to our hotel for a filling breakfast to recharge for the upcoming journey.
We had a relaxing car ride planned to Banyuwangi, our starting point for the Ijen hike, giving us enough time to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way (or catch up on some much-needed sleep!).
Enjoying Banyuwangi: Welcome to Didu’s Homestay
By the late afternoon, we arrived in Banyuwangi and were warmly welcomed by the lovely Didu’s Homestay Bed & Breakfast.
Offering a significant upgrade from our previous stay, Didu’s provided a charming atmosphere.
The garden was filled with lush greenery, complemented by a communal space and a kitchen perfect for socializing.
A refreshing swim was waiting for us in the inviting pool, while the spacious bungalows with open-air showers offered comfortable relaxation.
Highly Recommended Accommodation near Ijen:
We highly recommend staying at Didu’s Homestay during your time in Banyuwangi. The cozy vibe may even entice you to extend your visit and enjoy the bohemian charm a little longer!
Day 3. Hiking Mt. Ijen: the Blue Fire
- Conquering the Night: Hiking Ijen Crater’s Depths
An Early Start for an Unforgettable Journey:
The Ijen crater beckoned, and an early rise (00:30 AM!) was essential to embark on this thrilling adventure.
We drove to the designated parking area near Mount Ijen (Paltuding Ijen Parking Lot), where a quick stop involved settling the entrance fee (currently 100K IDR 150K, approximately €6).
- Flashlights On, Adventure Awaits:
Our 3-kilometer hike began, traversing a mix of flat, steep, and challenging sections – all under the cloak of darkness.
Don’t forget your trusty flashlight, as it will be your guide on this unique nighttime journey!
After conquering the trail, we reached the crater rim, standing at an impressive 2,769 meters above sea level.
- Descending into the Crater: A First-Time Thrill
For me, this was a first – a descent into the heart of a volcanic crater! While carved steps offered some support, the darkness and steep inclines demanded caution and a good sense of balance.
- Witnessing Ijen’s Blue Flames: A Journey Through Sulfur
Our perseverance finally paid off as we arrived at the Ijen crater’s sulfur mines. Here, the landscape dramatically transformed.
Vivid yellows and oranges dominated our vision, emanating from the fuming sulfur deposits.
The crater’s intense activity necessitated wearing protective masks throughout the exploration.
While the masks offered some relief, occasional wind shifts directed the fumes towards us, causing temporary irritation to our eyes and throats.
A Glimpse of the Elusive Blue Fire of Ijen Crater:
Our quest continued as we sought the famed blue flames of Mount Ijen.
While the spectacle that day was a bit subdued, with only a limited section actively burning, the journey through the sulfurous environment itself was a remarkable feat.
Ijen Sunrise Tour
We climbed back up the crater to witness the sunrise over Mt. Ijen’s lake, which was absolutely stunning.
The lake’s deep turquoise color contrasts beautifully with the bright yellow of the sulfur mines.
Additionally, the crater has an otherworldly appearance, making it a treat for the eyes.
Finally, we descended Mt. Ijen and were able to see the path we had climbed earlier, which was also quite stunning with the trees and fog.
After returning to our accommodation, we enjoyed a delicious banana pancake and prepared to depart.
Normally, the driver would take us back to Surabaya, which is a 7-8 hour drive. However, we decided to extend our journey to Bali.
Therefore, we took the ferry to Gilimanuk, which was included in the price. We bid farewell to our guide, driver, and the Mt. Bromo and Mt. Ijen tour.

- Wear thick socks for warmth.3.Put on heavy sweatpants or workout pants.3. Wear thermals or leggings under your pants.
